Description

As teacher-librarians, we are often delighted and even proud whenever the school communities we serve offers us positive feedback on the research projects taking place in our libraries. I recall one particularly busy year at the beginning of my teaching career in which our school library was adorned with the grade 3 students' spider dioramas, grade 4 students' paper reproductions of Pacific West Coast First Nation's art, grade 5 students' posters on ancient Egyptian mummies and pyramids, and grade 6 students' reports on different aspects of the federal government. Although our teacher-librarian looked exhausted by Christmas, her face broke into a grateful smile every time someone mentioned how engaging the students Found her library explorations. Considering the information-rich society in which our students live, the school library's emphasis on developing research and information literacy skills is understandably one of its most important objectives. Most of the learning activities in my current library revolve around developing students' abilities to independently locate, record, analyze, organize, and present information. However, aside from encouraging students to develop sophisticated research skills, I rarely have time to develop activities that encourage creative expression.
